How To Remove Moisture From Compressed Air

Moisture can be a huge problem in compressed air systems, as it can lead to corrosion, freezing, and reduced performance. Here are some steps you can take to remove moisture from compressed air:

  • Use a compressed air dryer: One of the most effective ways to remove moisture from compressed air is to use an air dryer. Compressed air dryers use a variety of methods to remove moisture, such as desiccant, refrigeration, and membrane separation. It is typically most efficient to install your air dryer outdoors.
  • Install a water separator: Water separators are designed to remove liquid water from compressed air. They work by using gravity to separate the water from the air, allowing it to collect in a drain.
  • Use compressed air filters: Compressed air filters are designed to remove particles and contaminants from compressed air. Coalescing filter elements have the ability to remove condensate and moisture, making them an effective tool for removing moisture from compressed air.
  • Drain your air tanks regularly: Moisture can collect in the bottom of air receiver tanks, so it’s important to drain compressed air tanks regularly. This will remove any moisture that has accumulated, and help prevent it from causing problems in your compressed air system.
  • Install an Aftercooler: An aftercooler cools the hot compressed air to prevent it from condensing. An aftercooler can knock out a lot of the moisture saving your air dryer from more moisture removal work. The most popular style of aftercooler is an air cooled aftercooler which is suitable for low to medium air flows. For high flows you may consider a water aftercooler.

  • There is no doubt that you can effectively remove moisture from compressed air and keep your system running smoothly. Regular maintenance and the use of compressed air dryers, water separators, coalescing filters, and drain valves can make sure that your compressed air system stays free of moisture and other contaminants.
