Walker Filtration Compressed Air Filter Housings Guide
Walker Filtration offers compressed air filter housings for everything from a small point-of-use air line to a large industrial compressor room. The range includes standard Alpha threaded filters, compact PRO XF high-flow housings, fabricated flanged vessels and specialty filters for silicone-free, high-temperature and high-pressure applications.
The housing and element perform separate parts of the selection process. The housing establishes the connection size, flow capacity and pressure rating. The Walker element grade determines whether the filter removes coarse particles, fine oil and water aerosols, oil vapor or dry particulate. Both must be correct for the application.

These ranges are not interchangeable. A standard Alpha housing is the usual choice for plant compressed air, while elevated pressure, high temperature, silicone sensitivity or very high flow calls for a purpose-built series.
Walker Alpha Compressed Air Filter Housings
Alpha is Walker Filtration's main threaded compressed air filter line. Compressor Shop carries 19 NPT models from the A30006 at 6 SCFM through the A31500 at 1,500 SCFM. Published flow ratings are based on 100 PSIG.
Alpha housings use a cast aluminum construction with internal and external corrosion protection. Push-fit elements simplify service, and the modular head design allows compatible filters to be close-coupled into a multi-stage assembly. The standard housings sold by Compressor Shop include a manual drain and either a pop-up or differential pressure indicator, depending on size, and are rated to 300 PSIG with the manual drain.

The housing number does not always match the element number. A30070, A30085 and A30105, for example, all accept the E30612 element family. Identify the complete housing model before ordering a replacement element rather than relying on the port size or the approximate dimensions.

Understanding Walker Filtration Grades
Compressor Shop offers the standard Alpha and PRO XF housings with X5, X1, XA and AC elements. The same housings can also accept reverse-flow RX grades when installed after a desiccant dryer.

X1 followed by XA is a common two-stage arrangement. X1 protects the fine coalescing element from heavier liquid and particulate loading, while XA provides the final aerosol removal. Add AC only when the application also requires oil-vapor or odor reduction. Activated carbon should be protected by properly sized upstream coalescing filters and should not receive bulk liquid.
Flow direction matters. Standard X grades operate as coalescing elements, while the RX grades are intended for reverse-flow dry particulate service. Use the arrow on the housing and verify the element grade whenever a filter is moved or repurposed.
Walker PRO XF High-Flow Filter Housings
PRO XF bridges the gap between large threaded Alpha filters and traditional fabricated vessels. Compressor Shop carries 11 models from the XF241 2-inch NPT housing at 700 SCFM through the XF472F 4-inch flanged housing at 3,000 SCFM.
The compact modular design can be installed as a single filter or banked into a multi-stage assembly. Walker uses a top-loading element and an externally accessible drain to reduce service time. The range is rated to 232 PSIG, and its E1142, E1162 and E1172 elements are available in the same coalescing, activated carbon and reverse-flow particulate grades used to build a complete filtration train.

Specialty Walker Filter Housings
Fabricated Flanged Filters for Large Systems
For flows beyond the PRO XF range, Compressor Shop lists Walker NA fabricated carbon-steel housings from the NA382 at 1,400 SCFM through the NA10818 at 12,600 SCFM. Available connections run from 3 to 10 inches. These housings use multiple E88 elements, with the quantity increasing with vessel capacity, and include a dual-view differential pressure indicator and manual drain connection.
Alpha Silicone-Free Filters
Walker Alpha silicone-free housings cover the same 6-to-1,500-SCFM range as standard Alpha filters but are manufactured for silicone-sensitive processes. They are particularly useful in automotive finishing, paint spraying, powder coating and other applications where silicone contamination can cause defects such as craters or poor coating adhesion. Use Walker ESF elements intended for the silicone-free range; do not substitute a standard E-series element solely because it appears dimensionally similar.
High-Temperature Particulate Filters
Walker 50HT stainless-steel filters are intended for dry particulate removal at temperatures where a standard coalescing housing is unsuitable. Compressor Shop carries models from the 50HT25 at 15 SCFM through the 50HT302 at 1,600 SCFM, with a maximum operating temperature of 450°F. These are specialty dust filters, not substitutes for conventional oil-and-water coalescing stages.
725-PSIG Alloy High-Pressure Filters
Standard Alpha and PRO XF housings must not be used above their published pressure limits. Walker's alloy high-pressure range is specifically rated to 725 PSIG. Compressor Shop lists nine models with 1/4- to 2-inch connections and flow ratings from 94 to 1,882 SCFM, including the 50HP25N and A50HP201N. These housings use dedicated HP element families and are suited to elevated-pressure compressed air and compatible gas applications.
How to Select the Correct Walker Housing
- Define the required air quality. Identify whether the process needs general particulate protection, fine coalescing, oil-vapor reduction or a combination of stages.
- Determine maximum system flow. Size for peak demand, not average consumption or pipe size alone.
- Confirm operating pressure. Catalog flow ratings are pressure-dependent. A housing rated at 100 PSIG carries a different volume of free air at another line pressure.
- Choose the connection type. Alpha covers smaller NPT lines, while PRO XF provides large threaded and compact flanged options. Fabricated housings serve the largest flanged systems.
- Check temperature and process restrictions. Activated carbon has a lower temperature limit, and high-temperature or silicone-sensitive systems require the appropriate specialty family.
- Match the OEM element family. Confirm the housing model, element family and grade suffix as three separate pieces of information.
Do not size a filter only by matching its port to the existing pipe. Several Walker housings share a connection size while carrying very different flow ratings. For example, Alpha A30450 and A30700 both have 2-inch NPT connections, but their catalog ratings are 450 and 700 SCFM.
Placement in a Compressed Air System
A water separator is normally the first treatment stage when bulk liquid is present. An X1 coalescing filter can then protect a refrigerated or desiccant dryer and reduce the load on the finer XA element. The XA filter provides fine aerosol control, while a reverse-flow particulate filter installed after a desiccant dryer captures desiccant fines. AC belongs at the final stage when oil vapor, taste or odor must also be reduced.
The exact sequence depends on compressor type, dryer design and required ISO 8573-1 air-quality class. Food, beverage, medical, breathing-air and direct-product-contact applications can require additional treatment, testing and regulatory controls beyond a standard filter train.
Pressure Drop, Drains and Element Maintenance
A filter housing must be sized generously enough to pass the required flow without excessive pressure loss. Undersized housings and loaded elements reduce pressure at the point of use, often causing the compressor to operate at a higher discharge pressure and consume more energy.
Inspect condensate drains regularly. A blocked or failed drain can allow collected liquid to re-enter the air stream, while an open or leaking drain wastes compressed air. Always isolate and fully depressurize the housing before servicing it.
Walker specifies replacement for standard coalescing and particulate elements at 12 months or 8,000 operating hours. Activated carbon elements should be replaced at least every six months. Differential pressure is useful for identifying a restriction, but it should not be the only replacement trigger because filtration performance can deteriorate without a dramatic increase in pressure drop.
Matching Walker Housings and OEM Elements
The element part number combines the element family with its filtration grade. An A30006 housing with fine coalescing filtration, for example, uses the Walker E30306XA OEM element. The same housing configured for activated carbon uses the E30306AC.
